It is remarkable the number of citizens that regard the United States of America as a ‘democracy.’ It is, of course, a Constitutional Republic, and always has been so. Thomas Jefferson regarded the distinction as such: “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.” This article, slightly revised from its original form, first appeared in the November 6, 2000 issue of The New American.
